Robert Dean

My story as an artist isn't as glamorous as some. I began my professional life as a graphic artist and designer - only to begin quietly painting later as a challenge to myself. To see if it was something I could do, never thinking it was something I would do. Outside of a 9th grade art class, I am entirely self taught and always still trying to learn. I never notice changes in my style project to project but I have noticed large changes when looking back over my work year to year. The subconscious variations must mean that I'm nowhere near what my style will be 5 or 10 years from now. And I'm excited to see what those pieces will look like..

The work

Although most consider me a "watercolorist" - I never have. Because very rarely do I only use one medium in a piece. I would consider myself a multimedia visual artist - primarily in portraiture. I would LOVE to be able to create rainy cityscapes like the masters - Joseph Zbukvic, Alvaro Castagnet. But I'm not good enough. So I stick to the things I like and can do without embarrassing myself - faces and forms.
